This week on The Cleanup Step, James and Dwayne discuss their recent trips to Grand Prix: Oakland and the Magic Cruise from Legion Events. Also, discussion of Standard and Extended.
Note - James mentions Travis Woo beat Tomoharu Saitou in the quarterfinals of the top 8 of GP Oakland. This is wrong - Travis played and defeated Saitou in the Swiss portion of the event on Sunday.

Tournament Magic – A Game of Endurance

Magic is a difficult game on its own to play and play well. Each turn has its own series of decisions to make on when to play certain spells, to attack, what to attack with, etc. It's a game as complex as chess... if the chess board and all the pieces kept changing every two minutes. Now take all that decision making and multiply it out by seven, eight, ten matches in a single day, all with the pressure of limited margin of error and the chance for one person in the room to qualify for a Pro Tour event. Quickly you can see that the game of tournament Magic is a lot different than a pickup draft with your friends or slinging EDH decks across the kitchen table. Even bringing your deck down for Friday Night Magic doesn't match the premier tournament experience - the stakes are lower, the rules enforcement is more lenient, and if you're at the top tables late in a FNM, there aren't 50 people watching your match.

Worldwake Release Events for Daaaays!

There has certainly been a lack of content on this site in the last few days and to be fair, I've had nothing interesting to write about. I won't be able to attend GP Oakland due to work and other constraints, but I did get my release event on this week. Usually what I do during release events is hit up a different one on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and rake in the goodies. How many gold doubloons did this pirate plunder on the weekend? Aargh mateys! Step abroad the U.S.S. G Pelly and find out!

You'll notice the lack of content over the past two weeks - myself and Short Round are getting ready to head to Oakland for the GP this weekend, and Dwayne is on a boat - the Magic Cruise to be more precise. We'll have reports from both of these events next week.
